1956-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Cataloged as UVC-0886, DMR-005, this 1956 Denver Mint Washington Quarter displays medium spread and extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the eagle's head, with light extra thickness on the stems and QUARTER DOLLAR. Struck in 90% silver (0.1808 oz ASW), the 1956-D was produced during the final decade of silver Washington Quarter production before the 1965 composition change to copper-nickel clad. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B in Mid Die State, with the reverse also in MDS and a die crack across the forehead and hair on the obverse; and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The broad coverage of the doubling across the entire reverse legend plus the eagle's head makes DDR-002 one of the more dramatic reversed doubled dies for the 1956-D date. The extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is particularly visible, where the secondary hub impression closely overlaps the primary design, creating noticeably heavier letterforms. The obverse forehead die crack in Stage B provides a reliable attribution marker for specimens in mid-die-state preservation.
