1956-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

The primary repunched mintmark variety for the 1956-D Jefferson Nickel, the WRPM-001 shows a D/D North displacement where the mintmark was punched twice with the original impression visible above the final position. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this regular strike variety carries extensive die markers across both sides. On the obverse, a strong die scratch runs north from the bottom left of the bust, with numerous additional scratches scattered throughout. The reverse presents several curving die scratches above the left side of the Monticello roof, a die scratch running north-northeast from the N in CENTS, another heading northwest from the V in FIVE, and many further scratches throughout. During this era, mintmarks were individually hand-punched into working dies, and slight misalignment between punches created the overlapping impressions that define repunched mintmark varieties. The abundance of die scratches on this particular die pair provides multiple confirmation points beyond the primary RPM feature.
