Description
Holding the lead catalog position for the 1956-D date, this Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista with an unusually extensive four-stage progression. Die markers UVC-414 / DMR-002: Stage A EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C LDS (unconfirmed); Stage D reverse and obverse VLDS. The progression through VLDS indicates this die pair was driven substantially beyond normal service life. No directional displacement is specified, and no additional markers such as cracks or gouges appear at any stage, suggesting relatively clean die surfaces throughout. Schlag's Jefferson Nickel was struck at Denver in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm. The mid-1950s Denver production was substantial, and this die pair's survival through four documented stages reflects extensive use at the facility before eventual retirement.
