Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-415 and DMR-003, this 1956-D Jefferson Nickel displays a repunched mintmark variety where the D was applied more than once at the Denver Mint. Three documented die stages capture its production progression: Stage A places both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B advances both to mid-die-state (MDS), and Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The confirmed EDS and MDS stages provide reliable reference points for evaluating the condition and die state of potential specimens, with the early die state offering the cleanest view of the repunched D before any accumulation of die wear might soften the secondary impression. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag, with Thomas Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and his Monticello estate on the reverse. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1956 in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm, the 1956-D nickel was produced during the mid-1950s prosperity when circulating coinage demand was consistently strong.
