1956-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Documented with die markers UVC-946 and DMR-006, DDR-002 on the 1956-D Jefferson Nickel shows light spread on UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA — portions of both the national motto and the country inscription on Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse. This partial coverage across two inscriptions is diagnostically useful: the doubling appears on UNUM (the final word of E PLURIBUS UNUM) and on STATES OF AMERICA (the latter portion of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA), indicating a hub displacement direction that interacted most visibly with text positioned in the right half of the reverse arc. The 1956-D was struck at the Denver Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel), carrying the small D mintmark to the right of Monticello. Light spread on these text areas requires magnified examination at 5x to 7x, focusing particularly on the letter strokes of S, T, and A in STATES where angular letterforms provide diagnostic surfaces. UVC-946 and DMR-006 allow collectors to verify the working die through supplementary characteristics, which is especially important when multiple DDR varieties for a single date affect overlapping text regions.
