Description

A D/D tilted (rotated) repunched mintmark on the 1955-D Roosevelt Dime, WRPM-009 exhibits particularly rich die marker data across both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a die chip appears about center of the right side of the second 5 in the date, and there is heavily polished die clash behind the neck and at the front of the hair, along with die scratches on the nose and in front of the eye. The reverse shows east-west die scratches around the olive stem, die clash at the lower left leaf and the lower olive, and die clash at the right upper oak leaf. The heavy die polish behind the neck suggests this die was clashed and subsequently polished in an attempt to remove the clash marks, leaving behind the telltale over-polished surface that experienced collectors recognize. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1955-D 10' WRPM-009, this variety illustrates how multiple die events can occur on a single working die. Roosevelt Dime RPMs from the 1950s are sought after because the hand-punched mintmark era produced numerous positional variations before mechanical mintmark application began.
