Description

Cataloged fifth among San Francisco's 1954 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverses, WDDO-005 records yet another hub misalignment event from the penultimate decade of Wheat Cent production. The Wexler Team assigned this variety the identifier 1954-S 1c WDDO-005, placing it within a date-mintmark family of at least five documented DDOs — a concentration that reflects the substantial die usage at San Francisco during the mid-1950s. The 1954-S had a mintage of 96,190,000 cents, struck in the standard post-war bronze composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc. By 1954, the Lincoln Wheat Cent was entering its final stretch: only four more years of production remained before Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse would replace the familiar Wheat Ears in 1959. Brenner's obverse portrait, refined over decades of die modifications, presents several reliable diagnostic areas for doubled die identification — the eyelid, the beard detail, the bowtie, and the small VDB initials on the bust truncation all serve as high-sensitivity checkpoints where even modest hub displacement produces detectable separation between primary and secondary images. San Francisco-minted Wheat Cents from this era are widely available in circulated condition, and WDDO-005 may surface among unsearched rolls or accumulations. No published die markers exist for this variety, so attribution must proceed through careful measurement of the spread direction and affected design elements, cross-referenced against the Wexler catalog descriptions for the other four 1954-S DDOs to ensure correct assignment.
