Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this 1954-S Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a BIE die break, where a small die fracture between the letters B-I-E of LIBERTY produces a raised vertical bar on struck coins. Cross-referenced as Cohen Index 54S-B1105 and Hardy Index 54S-6F+1 (09/02/2107). Hardy listed this as a F+, but on this sample the die break does not extend above the highest level of the letters, so it was listed as an FL+. Photography by Ray, a builder of custom coin photography setups, who provided the 3-D image of Mark's coin. BIE die breaks are unique to the Lincoln Cent series, occurring exclusively in the LIBERTY inscription area. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1954-S was among the final San Francisco Mint Wheat Cent issues before the series concluded in 1958.
