Description

The 1954-D Jefferson nickel RPM-002 is catalogued by VarietyVista under UVC-393 and DMR-003. Die stage documentation: Stage A shows light east-west die scratches on the reverse with the obverse also at early die state; Stage B shows both reverse and obverse at middle die state; Stage C shows both sides at late die state. Jefferson nickels of the mid-1950s were struck in standard cupro-nickel composition, with Denver's 1954 mintage exceeding 117 million pieces. Repunched mintmarks on post-wartime Jefferson nickels reflect the hand-punching of individual mintmark punches directly into working dies, a practice that continued until the Mint adopted hub-punched mintmarks in later decades. The east-west scratch pattern during the early die state serves as a useful confirming marker alongside the primary mintmark repunching. The UVC-393 identifier distinguishes RPM-002 from neighboring D-mint repunching varieties within the 1954-D Jefferson nickel attribution population.
