1953-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Classified as Class V, Pivoted Hub Doubling, WDDO-001 on the 1953-D Jefferson nickel displays a nice counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 8 o'clock, with the doubling clearly visible on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Class V doubling occurs when the hub rotates slightly around an off-center pivot point between hubbing impressions, producing a fanning spread that increases in magnitude with distance from the pivot — elements near the 8 o'clock position show minimal displacement, while those diametrically opposite show the greatest spread. Obverse die markers include a diagonal die scratch through the upper half of the B in LIBERTY, providing a useful secondary diagnostic for die identification. The reverse carries multiple markers: a die gouge appearing as a dot at the bottom of the small right window of Monticello, a diagonal die gouge from the lower right bottom of the R in AMERICA, and an almost horizontal die scratch under ME of AMERICA. Denver struck over 59 million nickels in 1953, and as the first-numbered DDO variety for the date-mint, WDDO-001 likely represents the most prominent doubled die discovery among the 1953-D nickel population. The pivot-class doubling on LIBERTY and the date makes this a visually appealing variety, as the fanning spread creates a distinctive appearance readily distinguishable from machine doubling or die deterioration effects.
