Description

Exhibiting a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark, this 1953-D Jefferson Nickel WRPM-002 shows the D mintmark punch applied at two distinct angles during die preparation. Obverse die markers include a light die scratch running north from the upper nose and N/S die scratches to the right of the upper queue, the tied-back portion of Jefferson's hair. On the reverse, a short die scratch runs NW from the center left of the E in STATES, die scratches run NE from the F in OF, and numerous die scratches run NE from the top of Monticello. Cross-referenced as 1953-D 5¢ WRPM-002 and attributed by the Wexler Team. The die scratches radiating from multiple points across Monticello and the surrounding reverse lettering create a distinctive fingerprint for this particular die. The obverse scratch from the nose and the scratches near the queue provide complementary identification markers, allowing collectors to confirm the die identity from either side of the coin before examining the mintmark area for the tilted repunch.
