Description
Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this 1953-D Jefferson Nickel carries one of the most distinctive RPM classifications: D/Inverted D, where the secondary D was punched upside-down before a correctly oriented D was applied. Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-386 / DMR-002: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with both at LDS. An inverted mintmark is fundamentally different from directional displacement -- the engraver inserted the D punch rotated 180 degrees, recognized the error, and corrected with a properly oriented application. At 75% copper and 25% nickel, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the FS-501 listing and dramatic inverted D make this one of the most actively pursued RPM varieties in the entire Jefferson Nickel series.
