Description

Second documented repunched mintmark for the 1952-D Franklin Half Dollar, this RPM-002 shows a D over D repunched to the south — contrasting with the westward RPM-001 for the same date. The southward displacement means the initial D was punched too high, and the die maker corrected by shifting downward, leaving the first D's traces visible above the final position. Having RPMs in two different directions for the 1952-D confirms that each die received its mintmark independently, with different positional errors requiring different correction directions. The D mintmark's geometry produces distinctive vertical overlap when repunched southward: the initial D's lower curves and serif detail appear above the final D, creating extra contour at the top of the letter. The 1952 Denver Franklin Half Dollar's dual RPMs (west and south) provide a collecting pair where the two varieties can be compared to appreciate how different displacement directions create visually distinct overlap patterns on the same letter shape.
