Description

Primary repunched mintmark for the 1952 Denver Franklin Half Dollar, this RPM-001 displays a D over D repunched to the west — the final D shifted leftward from the initial impression, leaving traces of the first D displaced to the east of the definitive position. Westward correction was among the most common repunching directions on Denver Franklin Half Dollars, reflecting a natural tendency for right-handed die workers to initially place the punch slightly too far right before correcting leftward. The 1952-D Franklin Half Dollar was struck during the series' fifth year at Denver, where production volumes were typically substantial. The D mintmark's distinctive shape — an angular letter with straight vertical stroke and curved right side — creates recognizable overlap patterns when repunched: the straight left edge of the displaced first D may appear as a secondary vertical line east of the final D's right curve. Sinnock's Benjamin Franklin portrait and Liberty Bell reverse were becoming established designs by 1952, and the series would continue for another eleven years before Kennedy's assassination prompted the design change. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm and 12.5 grams. Look for the eastward-displaced remnant of the initial D impression — the straight vertical stroke and curve of the first punch visible east of the final position.
