1952 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Strong extra thickness on LIBERTY, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the lower queue of Washington's hair marks this 1952 Washington Quarter as one of the more visually prominent doubled die obverses in the series, cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDO-001. Strong extra thickness affects multiple design elements: LIBERTY, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the lower queue of Washington's hair all display clear hub displacement, making WDDO-001 one of the more accessible Washington Quarter DDO attributions. On the obverse, a die scratch runs SW to NE in the field to the right of the E in WE. On the reverse, two die scratches are present: one running SW from the upper left of the T in QUARTER, and a second running SW from the center of the E in QUARTER. Cross-reference is CONECA 1-O-VI. The 1952 Philadelphia Washington Quarter had a mintage of approximately 38.8 million coins. With no mintmark to distinguish Philadelphia production from other dates, die variety attributes provide the primary differentiation tool for the specialist. The Wexler Variety ID for this entry is 1952 25¢ WDDO-001.
