Description

Among the most extraordinary doubled die varieties documented for the 1952-D Washington Quarter, WDDO-002 features a close clockwise spread pivoting at approximately 3:00 that affects LIB of LIBERTY and the date. What elevates this variety above typical doubled dies is that IN GOD WE TRUST is actually quadrupled — the result of doubling on a master hub that had itself been doubled (doubled master hub over doubled master hub) — making the motto lettering particularly rich in layered impressions. The spread is confirmed across the designer's initials as well. Struck in 90% silver, the 1952-D Washington Quarter was produced at Denver in substantial numbers, and WDDO-002's quadrupled motto is a standout feature within the Wexler Team's catalog of early Washington Quarter doubled die obverse varieties, setting it apart from conventional Class I or Class II hub doublings of the period. Die Markers: Obverse: A short die scratch runs SE from the bottom right of the B of LIBERTY. Numerous die scratches run SW/NE to the left of the upper profile. Reverse: A circular die scratch pattern runs throughout the eagle.
