1952-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Showing the D mintmark tilted or rotated over a previous D impression, this 1952 Denver Mint Roosevelt Silver Dime repunched mintmark variety was cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1952-D 10-cent WRPM-008, with an additional cross-reference to 1952-D 10-cent WRPM-010. The tilted/rotated displacement is less common than the directional (north, south, east, west) displacements seen on most RPM varieties, indicating that the mintmark punch was not only repositioned between blows but also slightly rotated. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running south from the lower right side of the O in GOD through the left side of the first T in TRUST, and an east-west die crack at the front of the hair. The reverse shows a die chip in the field at the lower left area of the mintmark and east-west die scratches above the LU of PLURIBUS. Repunched mintmarks on Roosevelt Dimes from the early 1950s are collected within the broader silver Roosevelt Dime specialty (1946-1964), and the Denver Mint's production during this period used hand-punched mintmarks on every working die — a process inherently prone to the positioning errors that create RPM varieties. The dual cross-referencing (WRPM-008 and WRPM-010) suggests that this variety has been studied under different classification approaches, a common occurrence as RPM cataloging has evolved over the decades.
