1952-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Roosevelt dime repunched mintmarks from the early production years offer a window into the manual mintmark application process used before the Mint adopted integrated mintmark hubs in 1990. WRPM-001 on the 1952-D Roosevelt dime shows a D/D displacement to the northeast, indicating the mintmark punch was applied twice with the second impression shifted slightly toward the upper right relative to the first. This creates a visible shadow or doubling of the D mintmark that can be detected under magnification. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt dime, which debuted in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and by 1952 the series was well established with Denver producing approximately 122.1 million dimes that year. The Wexler Team cataloged this as WRPM-001 with a companion CONECA cross-reference as RPM #1 (also listed as 1952-D 10 cent WRPM-002 under a secondary Wexler designation), establishing concordance between the two major attribution systems. No significant obverse or reverse die markers were noted beyond the repunched mintmark itself. The D/D Northeast direction indicates that after the initial mintmark impression, the mint worker repositioned the punch slightly upward and to the right before delivering the second blow. Collectors should examine the D mintmark on the reverse at moderate magnification, looking for traces of the first impression peeking out from behind the stronger final placement, particularly at the lower-left edges of the letter where the northeast shift would leave the initial D partially exposed.
