1951 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Produced during the early Korean War period when domestic coinage demand was climbing alongside military spending, the 1951 Lincoln wheat cent WDDO-002 carries hub doubling on its obverse attributed by the Wexler Team as 1951 1¢ WDDO-002. No cross-references have been established in the CONECA or Fivaz-Stanton catalogs. Philadelphia produced 284.6 million cents in 1951, a figure reflecting the postwar economic expansion that was driving increased need for circulating coinage across all denominations. The early 1950s represent a transitional period in Mint die-making technology, as the facility was beginning to adopt more mechanized die preparation methods while still relying on multi-impression hubbing techniques that could introduce misalignment between successive hub impressions. Each impression was intended to deepen and refine the design in the working die, but if the hub shifted between impressions, the resulting die would carry a doubled image transferred to every coin it struck. WDDO-002 is the second documented doubled die obverse for 1951, sitting alongside WDDO-001 in the Wexler census. Lincoln wheat cents from the early 1950s circulated extensively, and many were absorbed into the massive penny hoards that characterized the era, meaning surviving examples of die varieties can sometimes be found in old accumulations and estate lots. Collectors examining potential WDDO-002 candidates should focus on the elements most susceptible to visible doubling: the date, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the fine details of Lincoln's portrait, particularly around the ear and bow tie.
