1951 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Produced through hub doubling where misalignment during die preparation created visible design duplication, this Philadelphia Mint 1951 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-003 was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-1790 / DMR-006: Stage A with a heavy die scratch south from L of LIBERTY at EMDS and reverse at EMDS; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The heavy die scratch extending south from the L of LIBERTY is the primary attribution marker for distinguishing this die from other 1951 doubled die obverse varieties. During the hub doubling process, the working hub impressions were misaligned during one of the multiple hubbing cycles required to produce a complete working die, leaving the design elements slightly displaced from their intended positions. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1951 Philadelphia cent had a mintage of approximately 284.6 million pieces, making varieties from this large production accessible.
