1951-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1951-D 25¢ WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-V and Cherrypickers FS-25-1951D-101 (Removed in 6th Edition), this Denver Mint Washington Quarter displays a strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 6:00, most visible on LIBERTY. On the obverse, a die scratch runs from the lower E to the lower R in LIBERTY, a die crack runs WSW/ENE across the upper forehead, and another die crack runs east-west through the upper hair. The reverse carries two short parallel die scratches running ESE from the lower O in OF. The Cherrypickers listing as FS-25-1951D-101 was removed in the 6th Edition, though the variety remains cataloged under the Wexler and CONECA attribution systems. Struck in 90% silver with John Flanagan's George Washington design, the 1951-D Washington Quarter is part of the early postwar silver quarter production at Denver. The strong counterclockwise pivot doubling on LIBERTY makes this variety identifiable with a loupe, and the multiple die cracks on the obverse provide additional diagnostics for confirming the specific die pair.
