Description

Holding the primary doubled die obverse designation for the 1951-D Washington quarter, DDO-001 displays light spread on LIBERTY — the inscription that runs along the upper left obverse rim of John Flanagan's Washington portrait design, in continuous production since the quarter's 1932 debut. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-0756 and DMR-003 and documented three progressive die stages that map the working die's deterioration across its production life. Stage A represents early die state, though this remains unconfirmed, indicating no verified specimens have been examined at the earliest point of die use. Stage B likewise awaits confirmation at mid die state. Stage C, however, reveals dramatic late die state progression: a die crack running across the bust on the obverse, a separate die crack traversing the hair detail, and a die crack descending down the eagle's right wing on the reverse — all confirmed at LDS. The obverse is additionally classified as ODV-006, an Obverse Design Variant designation that identifies the specific master die lineage for this working die. Denver struck approximately 35.35 million quarters in 1951, a modest production figure that reflects post-war coinage demand before the mintage expansion of the mid-1950s. The light spread on LIBERTY — where Flanagan's lettering sits against the raised rim with distinct serif terminations — provides the primary doubling diagnostic, though the spread is subtle enough that collectors should use at least 10-15x magnification with directional lighting to resolve the secondary letter impressions from the primary strike.
