1950 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-191 and DMR-003, the 1950 Roosevelt Silver Dime DDO-001 holds the primary doubled die obverse catalog position for this date, exhibiting strong spread on John R. Sinnock's designer initials (JS at the base of Roosevelt's neck truncation) with extra thickness on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. The strong spread on the designer initials with extra thickness — rather than directional spread — on the date and motto suggests a Class VI distended hub doubling mechanism where hub expansion between impressions produced concentric thickening most pronounced on the compact JS letterforms. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B places both obverse and reverse in mid-die state, and Stage C shows a die crack across the hair in late die state with the reverse also in LDS. The die crack across Roosevelt's hair in Stage C provides a clear late-stage identification marker. As DDO-001, this variety represents the first and most significant doubled die obverse documented for the 1950 date — an early year in the Roosevelt Dime series which began in 1946. The 1950 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 2.50 grams at 17.9 mm diameter, with a mintage of 50,130,114 dimes. The JS initials at the neck truncation are the most sensitive attribution checkpoint, as their small scale amplifies the strong spread into clearly doubled letterforms under 7x magnification.
