1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Recognized as FS-501 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this 1948-S Washington quarter carries a dramatic quadruply punched mintmark showing S/S/S/S displacement to the north, northeast, and south. Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-002 with die marker references UVC-0682 and DMR-006, the four distinct impressions of the S mintmark make this one of the most extensively repunched varieties in the Washington quarter series. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state is characterized by numerous north-south die scratches on both the obverse and reverse surfaces. Stage C at late die state is unconfirmed. The FS-501 cross-reference ensures this variety appears in standard reference guides, elevating its visibility among collectors beyond the specialized RPM community.
