Description

Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1948-S 25 cent WDDR-001, this San Francisco Washington silver quarter displays a strong clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately ten o'clock, visible on QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, and the lower wreath. The reverse also carries a repunched mintmark listed as WRPM-009, showing S/S Tilted or Rotated, creating a dual-attribution variety. Obverse markers include short die scratches running SW from center left of R in LIBERTY and a strong die gouge running west from the bottom of Y in LIBERTY. The reverse presents a die scratch NNW from the bottom left of L in PLURIBUS, a vertical scratch between U and N in UNUM, and numerous scratches running NNW/SSE to the left of the eagle's neck. The pivot-point doubling produces strongest displacement on elements nearest four o'clock, where QUARTER DOLLAR shows the most pronounced spread. As the primary doubled die reverse listing for 1948-S, this variety combines two distinct die anomalies in a single collectable specimen.
