1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

RPM-001 is the primary repunched mintmark variety on the 1948-S Washington Quarter, cataloged UVC-0681 and DMR-005. The S mintmark on this 90% silver issue received two punch applications to the working die, leaving a secondary impression offset from the primary. Three die stages document the variety's progression. Stage A and Stage B details are recorded in the die marker catalog. Stage C (LDS) carries the most extensive die progression evidence: the reverse advances to LDS condition while the obverse develops a die crack across the bust — a strong secondary identifier — and an additional die crack across the upper hair. A die scratch through the 48 of the date is also documented at Stage C, providing a date-area marker that survives with moderate wear. Washington Quarters of 1932–1964 are 90% silver, and the 1948-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint.
