1948-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1948D-1DO-005, this 1948 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent features an extra eyelid below the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the bottom of the I of IN, a small die gouge to the left of the top of the 1 in the date, and die clash marks to the right of the throat. On the reverse, a die clash extends between the lower C and E in CENT down to the I in UNITED, accompanied by two strong die gouges below the left side of the C in CENT. The die clash marks on both sides indicate this die pair experienced at least one instance where obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse design elements to the opposing die face. Struck in 95% copper at Denver during the postwar production era, the 1948-D Wheat Cent saw substantial mintages as the Mint returned to full peacetime operations. The extra eyelid beneath the primary is a classic southward hub doubling diagnostic, and the surrounding die markers provide strong secondary confirmation.
