1948-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Concentrating its doubling on the date numerals, this 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-002 shows a close spread towards the center on 194 in the date. The inward-directed displacement affects three of the four date digits, leaving the 8 as a comparison reference for collectors assessing the variety. Rich die marker detail supports attribution on both sides. On the obverse, a die gouge appears to the left of the upper back of Lincoln's head, and several parallel die scratches run from north-northwest to south-southeast to the right of the profile. The reverse contributes a die scratch running northeast from the lower right of the T in CENT. This three-point marker system — head gouge, profile scratches, and CENT scratch — provides high-confidence identification. Attributed by the Wexler Team with the variety designation 1948-D 1¢ WDDO-002, this Denver Mint cent was produced during the postwar period when robust mintages continued across all cent facilities. Collectors should focus on the 1, 9, and 4 of the date, looking for subtle secondary impressions displaced toward the coin's center.
