1948-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

WDDO-003 of the 1948-D Franklin half dollar exhibits a spread toward the center showing light doubling on the L of LIBERTY, GOD, and the first T in TRUST, with weaker doubling visible on additional letters of GOD WE TRUST. The reverse of this die marriage is identified as WWHR-001, a Wexler Working Hub Reverse designation indicating that the reverse die also carries hub doubling from the working hub stage of die production. This pairing of an obverse doubled die with a hub-doubled reverse makes the die marriage particularly notable for variety specialists. Obverse die markers include a light northeast-to-southwest die scratch between the head and the L of LIBERTY. The reverse shows east-to-west die scratches between the rim and the ED of UNITED, along with a short north-to-south die scratch at the inside left center of the D in UNITED. The Franklin half dollar, designed by John R. Sinnock, was struck from 1948 to 1963, and the 1948-D represents the first Denver Mint issue of the series. The presence of hub doubling on both sides of this die pair enhances its significance within the Franklin half dollar variety landscape.
