1947-S Over Mint Mark OMM-001
Error
Description
A landmark over mintmark variety in the Roosevelt Dime series, the 1947-S OMM-001 displays an S punched over a D mintmark in a centered position. Cataloged as UVC-168/169, DMR-011/012, and cross-referenced as FS-501, this variety was struck at San Francisco using a die originally prepared with a Denver D mintmark before correction. The reverse mintmark style is MMS-003, the Sans Serif type. VarietyVista documents four die states: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, as does Stage B in mid-die state. Stage C shows both reverse and obverse reaching late die state, indicating extended production use. By Stage D, die scratches running north-south appear on the reverse in very late die state, and the obverse die was replaced while in early die state, confirming a die pairing change. The Roosevelt Dime series began production in 1946, making this 1947 variety one of the earliest documented over mintmark errors in the series. Over mintmark varieties occur when a die intended for one mint facility receives a corrective punch for another, leaving traces of the original letter beneath the final impression.
