1947 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1947 25¢ WDDO-001 and extensively cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-I, Cherrypickers FS-25-1947-101, this Washington Silver Quarter features a counterclockwise spread visible on LIBERTY, the date, the bottom of the ribbon, the designer's initials JF (for John Flanagan), and slightly on IN GOD WE TRUST. The CCW rotational displacement means the secondary hub impression rotated counterclockwise relative to the primary, producing separation that increases with distance from the rotation's pivot point — with LIBERTY and the date at the coin's periphery showing the most pronounced doubling. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running southwest-to-northeast below the LI of LIBERTY and a die crack running across the base of the bust. Reverse markers feature a die gouge running from the E to the R in AMERICA, a die scratch running north from the O in OF, and a die crack running down the eagle's right wing — three diagnostic points distributed across different areas of the reverse face that collectively fingerprint this specific working die. The CONECA Class I designation confirms this as a Rotated Hub Doubling variety, and the Cherrypickers FS-25-1947-101 listing establishes it as a variety significant enough for active searching in circulation and coin rolls. Designed by John Flanagan after Jean-Antoine Houdon's bust of George Washington, the 1947 Washington Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The reverse features a heraldic eagle with spread wings perched on a bundle of arrows, flanked by olive branches. The combination of CONECA, Cherrypickers, and Wexler cross-references confirms this as one of the most significant and well-documented doubled die obverse varieties for the 1947 Washington Quarter date.
