1947 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Light but diagnostic spread appears on IN and TR of TRUST on this 1947 Washington Quarter doubled die obverse, attributed by VarietyVista as DDO-003. Die markers are cataloged as UVC-0640 DMR-004 across three documented stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state featuring a light die crack across the base of the bust and a light die crack down the eagle’s right wing. The late die state cracks provide secondary attribution points that help confirm the die identity independent of the doubling itself. John Flanagan’s Washington Quarter design, with its bold lettering on the obverse trust motto, tends to display even subtle hub doubling with reasonable clarity on IN and TR, where the letter geometry amplifies small displacements. The 1947 Philadelphia issue was struck in 90% silver composition, the standard for quarters until 1965, and documented doubled die obverses from the immediate postwar period are less commonly cataloged than those from later decades, giving DDO-003 added significance.
