1947-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-001 under die markers UVC-0646 and DMR-002, this 1947 Denver Washington silver quarter shows a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials. As the primary doubled die obverse listing for the date, DDO-001 carries particular significance for the 1947-D quarter. Three die states are documented. Stages A and B in early and mid die state remain unconfirmed. Stage C in late die state presents dramatic circular cracking: one crack runs from U of TRUST across the base of the bust into the field right of the queue, while a second circular crack extends across the head into the field below Y of LIBERTY. The reverse also reaches late die state. Washington quarters from the post-war era were struck in 90% silver, and the 1947-D issue saw production at Denver during the economic expansion following World War II. The circular crack pattern in Stage C, arcing through both the bust base and head areas, creates a visually striking deterioration signature that likely encouraged preservation of late die state specimens.
