1947-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1947-D 25-cent WDDR-001, this Washington Silver Quarter doubled die reverse exhibits massive extra thickness spread towards the center on QUARTER DOLLAR, USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the lower leaves and branches, and the lower wings of the eagle. The "massive" intensity classification combined with the center-directed spread makes this one of the more dramatic doubled die reverses in the Washington Quarter series. No obverse die markers have been noted, placing all attribution weight on the reverse diagnostics. Notably, the reverse also carries a repunched mintmark variety separately listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1947-D 25-cent WRPM-003 — a D/D Tilted (Rotated) — making this a combination variety where the same die exhibits both hub doubling and mintmark repunching. Combination DDR/RPM varieties are particularly prized because they offer two distinct types of variety interest on a single coin, with each feature independently verifiable. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan, struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition, weighing 6.25 grams at 24.3 mm diameter with a reeded edge. The 1947-D was produced during the immediate post-war era, with the Denver Mint resuming full peacetime production levels. As WDDR-001, this variety holds the primary doubled die reverse catalog position for the date-mint combination, typically indicating it was either the first DDR discovered or the most significant. The massive extra thickness on QUARTER DOLLAR is the most immediately visible diagnostic feature, while the RPM-003 tilted D/D provides secondary confirmation of the specific die.
