1947-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-153, DMR-009, this 1947 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime displays a repunched mintmark where traces of the initial D punch placement remain visible alongside the final position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A represents the early die state, Stage B the mid-die state, and Stage C the late die state, allowing collectors to sequence specimens across the production life of this die pair. Repunched mintmarks on Roosevelt Dimes occurred because individual letter punches were used to apply the mintmark to each working die by hand, a process prone to positional variation. When the punch was applied off-target on the first strike, it had to be corrected, leaving evidence of the original impression. John R. Sinnock's Franklin Roosevelt design was introduced in 1946, making the 1947-D a second-year issue in the series. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), pre-1965 Roosevelt Dimes combine precious metal content with die variety interest. The three documented stages help collectors determine the relative production timing of their specimens within this die pair's working life.
