1947-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
RPM-003 on the 1947-D Jefferson Nickel presents a clockwise-rotated repunched mintmark cataloged UVC-356 and DMR-004, designated D/D Rotated CW. The mintmark punch was applied twice to the working die, with the first impression landing at a clockwise-rotated angle relative to the final position — a rotation repunching rather than a simple directional offset. Three die stages are documented for this variety. Stage A details are recorded in the die marker catalog. Stage B (MDS) carries a specific and confirming die marker: a light die scratch from the upper left of the E in MONTICELLO, accompanied by additional light die scratches in front of Lincoln's nose. These Stage B scratches — one keyed to a letter in the architectural legend, the other keyed to facial anatomy — provide precise reference points for confirming stage assignment. The 1947-D Jefferson Nickel is a standard copper-nickel post-wartime issue struck at Denver. Rotated repunchings produce a more complex ghost impression than simple directional offsets and can be more challenging to attribute on worn examples, making EDS and MDS coins the preferred acquisition targets.
