1947-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Primary doubled die reverse for the 1947 Denver Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-001 shows Class II distorted hub doubling with a center-directed spread on FIVE CENTS and MONTICELLO, increasing slightly left to right. The examined specimen was in late die state. Doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was present but difficult to see, consistent with distorted hub doubling where intensity varies across the die face. The reverse provides three reliable markers: a die dot above the right porch, a die dot in the upper left arch, and a diagonal die gouge in the upper B of PLURIBUS. These markers on the building's architectural details and adjacent legend make attribution straightforward under moderate magnification. The 1947-D was struck during the early postwar period when Schlag's design had been in production less than a decade. WDDR-001's designation as the lead doubled die reverse confirms it as the most significant hub doubling for this date and mint.
