1947-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Carrying dual-variety status, this 1947 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel is both a Class II distorted hub doubled die reverse (WDDR-002) and a repunched mint mark (WRPM-001/RPM number 1). The Class II doubling — where angular hub misalignment during secondary hubbing distorts the design — shows close spread on BUS of PLURIBUS, UNUM, AMERICA, and slightly on CENTS and the second O of MONTICELLO. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-II, this variety holds the number-one position in both the RPM and CONECA reverse doubled die listings for the 1947-D nickel, suggesting it was among the first varieties discovered for this date. Die markers aid attribution: no significant obverse markers were noted, while the reverse displays a short slanted die gouge in the field above the left porch of Monticello. The repunched mint mark component means the D was punched into the working die more than once in slightly different positions, adding a second collectible variety to the same coin.
