Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista with markers UVC-0625 and DMR-013, the 1946-D Washington Quarter RPM-005 documents a D/D Southeast repunching — the secondary D impression shifted southeast of the primary. Repunched mintmarks on 1940s Washington Quarters result from the hand-punching methods used at Denver, where the D loglet was individually driven into each working die and could require repositioning if the first strike was misaligned. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed). Stage B records both reverse and obverse at Middle Die State. Stage C is Late Die State, distinguished by a light die crack developing down the eagle's right wing — a reliable LDS marker for this variety. The 1946-D Washington Quarter is a 90% silver coin struck in the first postwar year of quarter production, featuring John Flanagan's portrait design that had been in continuous use since 1932. Repunched mintmarks on 1946-D quarters are catalogued across multiple die marriages. The Stage C die crack along the eagle's right wing provides an unmistakable secondary marker for late-state attribution, and the Southeast displacement of the secondary D is the primary attribution criterion.
