1946-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0622 and DMR-010, the 1946-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002 is a well-staged Washington Silver Quarter variety. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. By Stage B, both the reverse and obverse are at mid die state, indicating a moderate point in the die's working life. The defining late-stage marker is a die crack that formed from the US of E PLURIBUS UNUM to the wing on the eagle's reverse — a characteristic LDS crack that serves as the anchor for Stage C identification; the reverse is fully late die state at this point. Washington Quarters struck from 1932 through 1964 were composed of 90% silver, designed by John Flanagan after a model by sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser. The Denver Mint's mintmark was applied by hand punch to individual working dies during this era, producing the small misalignments that generate repunched mintmark varieties. RPM-002 on the 1946-D is one of multiple repunched mintmark varieties catalogued for this date, and the late-stage die crack from PLURIBUS to the wing provides a convenient secondary diagnostic for specimens exhibiting that feature.
