1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015
ErrorDescription
Combining two distinct die varieties on a single coin, this 1946-D Roosevelt Dime carries both doubled die obverse WDDO-015 and repunched mintmark WRPM-013 designations from the Wexler Team. The RPM component shows a D/D West — the second mintmark punch landing west of the initial impression. This dual attribution means the obverse die received a misaligned hub impression producing the doubling, while the same die also had its D mintmark hand-punched twice in slightly different positions. As the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime series, 1946 attracts heightened collector interest, and dual-error varieties from first-year issues carry particular appeal. The D/D West RPM direction indicates the punch drifted laterally during the second application. Fifteen documented DDOs for the 1946-D Roosevelt Dime reflects intensive study of this first-year Denver issue, where the new design's unfamiliarity may have contributed to manufacturing inconsistencies as Mint staff adjusted to different die characteristics. The convergence of both DDO and RPM on one die makes this a reference example for multi-variety attribution. Close spread towards the center shows on IGWT and the date.Die Markers: Obverse: Many circular and crisscrossing die scratches left of the ear. Short die scratches extend N from the forehead.
