1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

From the first year of Roosevelt dime production at the Denver Mint, the 1946-D WDDO-001 exhibits a Class II spread toward the center visible on BERTY of LIBERTY. Class II distorted hub doubling arises from a warped hub surface that produces uneven displacement — in this case, the spread direction converges inward, drawing the secondary image toward the die's center rather than outward toward the rim. The doubling's concentration on the final four letters of LIBERTY, while the leading LI shows no visible spread, indicates the distortion's effect was strongest in that region of the hub. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch running southwest from the lower left area of the G in GOD and a die gouge in the field west of the center of the 1 in the date. On the reverse, a north-northwest to south-southeast die scratch passes through the I of AMERICA, and short die scratches appear below the RIC in AMERICA. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1946-D 10¢ WDDO-001, no other cross-references are currently known. These specific die markers allow precise attribution to this working die.
