1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

Struck during the inaugural year of John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime — introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945 — this Denver Mint WDDO-011 exhibits very weak Class II doubling on the date and Sinnock's JS initials. Die varieties from a design's first year carry inherent significance as documentation of the initial production runs, when new dies and hubs were being used for the first time. Type I die gouges provide supplementary attribution markers. The reverse of this coin carries a separate doubled working hub attribution as WWHR-001, making this a dual-attribution piece with both an obverse doubled die and a reverse doubled working hub — a combination that adds complexity and desirability. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1946-D 10c WDDO-011, the 1946 Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver, a composition that would continue through 1964 before the switch to clad. The first-year Denver issue saw substantial production, and the documentation of eleven doubled die obverses reflects sustained research interest in this transitional date. A very weak Class II spread towards the center shows best on the 6 of the date and the designer's initials. Die scratch WNW from about left center of the L in LIBERTY.
