1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1946-D 10-cent WDDO-009, this Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits a Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 2:00 on the dial, visible on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials JS, and slightly on the date. The Class V (Pivoted Hub Doubling) mechanism means the working hub was slightly rotated around a fixed point during one of the hub impressions, causing the displacement to increase progressively with distance from the pivot — letters near the 2:00 position show minimal offset while those furthest from the pivot display the strongest spread. The obverse is classified as Type I with a die gouge at the rim above the T in LIBERTY and a short die scratch south between the upper lip and nose. Notably, the reverse carries doubling from a doubled working hub identified as WWHR-001, with short heavy die scratches running west from all letters of UNITED and north from the tops of the right-hand oak leaves — meaning both sides of this coin exhibit hub-related anomalies from different stages of the die manufacturing process. No external cross-references beyond the Wexler listing are currently known. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and struck at the Denver Mint in 1946, the inaugural year of the series introduced to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in April 1945.
