1946-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012

Description

Also from the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime, the 1946-D DDO-012 shows light spread on the date, designer John R. Sinnock's initials positioned side by side, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the profile itself — a broader distribution of doubling than DDO-002 from the same date, though at a lighter intensity. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-080 with die marriage DMR-044, this variety is struck from the same ODV-001 obverse die variety as DDO-002 but from a different working die. The "side by side" description of the doubled designer's initials indicates horizontal displacement, contrasting with the "top to bottom" vertical displacement seen on DDO-002 — a distinction that helps collectors differentiate these two first-year varieties. Four die states are documented, with stages A through C all unconfirmed while stage D shows both obverse and reverse in very late die state (VLDS). Profile doubling — visible on Roosevelt's facial features — is notable because it extends the doubling beyond inscriptions into the design elements themselves, making DDO-012 potentially detectable without examining individual letters.
