1946-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010

Description

From the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime, the 1946-D DDO-010 shows light hub doubling spread on IN GOD WE TRUST — the motto positioned along the left obverse rim on John R. Sinnock's portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had died in April 1945. The 1946 introduction replaced the Mercury Dime after thirty years of service, making any 1946 die variety a first-year piece with added historical significance. Die markers UVC-079 and DMR-043 track this variety through three stages, with Stage B providing the strongest identification feature: a prominent die gouge running northwest through the W of WE and the letters IN, creating a distinctive raised mark across two words of the motto. Stage A is documented as early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows both sides in mid die state with the diagnostic gouge, and Stage C reaches late die state (unconfirmed). The obverse die is classified as ODV-001, the first obverse die variety cataloged for the date. Struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 2.50 grams — the same silver composition that would continue through 1964. Attributed by VarietyVista.
