1946-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Fourth in the obverse doubled die catalog for the 1946-D Roosevelt dime, DDO-004 exhibits medium spread across the date, the designer's initials JS (placed side by side at the base of Roosevelt's neck), and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt dime design debuted in 1946 — the year following Franklin Roosevelt's death — making the 1946-D one of the first-year-of-issue coins in the series. Denver struck approximately 61.04 million silver dimes that inaugural year, a substantial production run that generated multiple die pairs susceptible to hub doubling during the die manufacturing process. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-042 and DMR-006, documenting four die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), Stage C where both obverse and reverse surfaces have progressed to late die state, and Stage D where both sides exhibit very late die state characteristics. The four-stage progression — the most granular die state documentation in many DDO census entries — provides collectors with a comprehensive roadmap for tracking wear across the production life of this particular die. The ODV-001 obverse design variant notation adds a secondary classification layer that links this die to a specific design hub. Medium spread on the designer's initials JS is particularly diagnostic because these small letters sit in a relatively uncluttered field area at the truncation of Roosevelt's bust, where even modest doubling is readily visible under 10-15x magnification against the smooth surrounding surface.
