Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this 1946-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/D/D Tilted (Rotated) and Tilted (Rotated) triple-punched mintmark with two distinct rotational components, producing a complex overlay pattern. Cross-referenced as None known; Wexler Variety ID: 1946-D 5¢ WRPM-006. The photo of the RPM was taken by Brian Ribar. Obverse die markers include a die scratch NNW from the left lower area of the E in WE. Reverse markers show a WSW/ENE die scratch connecting the top of the F in FIVE to the top of the I in FIVE. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1946-D was the first Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel struck after the wartime silver alloy era ended, resuming the standard copper-nickel composition that had been suspended since mid-1942.
