Description

Third doubled die reverse for the 1946-D Jefferson Nickel cataloged by the Wexler Team, WDDR-003 presents Class II distorted hub doubling on UNUM. This doubling occurs when the working hub distorts slightly between impressions during die-sinking, producing a spread that varies in direction across different design elements. The doubling on UNUM is close, requiring careful examination under magnification to distinguish from die deterioration. The obverse die is also listed as WDDO-003, confirming both dies in this pair received misaligned secondary hub impressions — a coin with doubled elements on both sides. Die markers include a slanted die scratch above VE of FIVE and a die dot to the lower left of I in FIVE on the reverse, providing secondary attribution points. The 1946-D Jefferson Nickel represents the post-war return to standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition after four years of wartime silver alloy (1942-1945).
