1946-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Carrying Class II distorted hub doubling, WDDR-001 of the 1946-D Jefferson Nickel shows close doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS, spanning both the national inscription and denomination on the reverse. Class II distorted hub doubling results from hub distortion between impressions during die preparation, generating tight spread that requires careful magnification to observe. The 1946-D marks the return to standard composition and normal mintmark placement after the wartime silver alloy years of 1942 through 1945, when the large mintmark had been positioned above Monticello. With the return to peacetime production, the small D mintmark resumed its standard position to the right of Monticello. Obverse die markers include die scratches near the rim above the 9 of the date and a die gouge above the E of WE. Reverse die markers include a die dot above the right arch of Monticello and a die dot above the R of PLURIBUS. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the Denver Mint, this first postwar Denver Jefferson Nickel documents Class II reverse hub doubling on both the national legend and denomination with confirming die markers on both sides.
